The Risks of Cheap Website Design
I recently came across a business that interested me and decided to check out their website to learn more. I was surprised at the condition of the site after giving it a once-over. Dated design, poorly constructed, typos galore. Bad. I decided that I probably wouldn’t contact them – the iffy site design left me feeling uneasy about engaging with them. After all, if this was the condition of their site, how did they run their actual business?
I scrolled to the bottom of the homepage to see if the developer/designer had linked to their site, which they had. I followed the link and found what I expected. The design was pretty questionable at best. Plastered right at the top of the page was an advertisement for a “brand new 5-7 page website for only $289!”
This isn’t about knocking budgets or claiming that the only way to get a quality website is to spend millions. BUT what I can say is that there are risks of cheap website design.
What a cheap website may say about your business
What does a generic, poorly constructed sub-$300 website say about your business? Does it instill confidence in your prospective clients? Will they judge your services based on that site? What is the value of that $300 site? What is the negative impression that folks will get from that site?
There are plenty of options available if you simply don’t have $50 grand laying around for a high-end website. Maybe your business needs don’t require that (or you think it doesn’t – but that’s another conversation.)
How many thousands of dollars in business are you willing to give up on that $289? If you think of your design projects as an investment, and realize that a quality investment will almost certainly result in additional business, you’re better positioned to resist the temptation to go cheap on something as critical as your website.
